In October, members of the Rotary Club of Leicester, led by the dedicated Impact Group, came together with the CFWHub to organise a meaningful community event in support of Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign. The Rotary Polio Wheel ‘N’ Walk was more than just a fundraising event. It was an opportunity to raise awareness about the global fight against polio while bringing together people from across Leicester in a shared commitment to improving public health and making a lasting difference.
The event reflected Rotary’s long-standing mission to eradicate polio from every corner of the world. Although tremendous progress has been made over the past few decades, polio remains a threat in a small number of countries. Continued awareness, vaccination efforts, and fundraising are essential to ensure the disease is eliminated forever. The Wheel ‘N’ Walk served as a reminder that local communities can play an important role in supporting this global cause.

A Walk That Celebrated Unity and Community
The highlight of the day was a charity walk through Leicester that took participants past several places of worship across the city. The carefully planned route symbolised unity, inclusion, and respect for Leicester’s rich cultural and religious diversity. By walking together, participants demonstrated how people from different backgrounds, faiths, and communities can unite behind a common purpose.
The walk began at Stoneygate Baptist Church, where participants received a warm welcome along with refreshments before setting off. The friendly atmosphere encouraged conversation and fellowship, allowing walkers to connect while supporting an important cause.
After completing the route, participants returned to the church, where further refreshments were available. The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the day’s achievements, meet fellow supporters, and celebrate the sense of community that had made the event such a success.
Supporting Public Health Beyond the Walk

The event also highlighted the importance of vaccination and preventative healthcare. Following the walk, a National Vaccination Programme van was stationed in the church car park, providing information and promoting routine vaccinations. Its presence reinforced the connection between local healthcare initiatives and the worldwide effort to prevent diseases such as polio.
Later in the day, attendees gathered in the church hall to hear from guest speakers who shared updates on the global campaign to eradicate polio. The talks explored the remarkable progress that has already been achieved through international partnerships while emphasising the work that still lies ahead. They also highlighted how vaccination continues to save millions of lives and remains one of the most effective public health interventions in history.
Incredible Community Support Raises Vital Funds
The generosity of everyone involved made the Rotary Polio Wheel ‘N’ Walk a tremendous success. Thanks to participants, volunteers, donors, and supporters, the event raised an impressive £720 for the End Polio Now campaign.
This achievement became even more significant through the support of Gift Aid and the long-standing partnership between Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Foundation has committed to contributing $2 for every $1 raised by Rotary towards polio eradication. As a result, the funds generated from the event are expected to have an overall impact of approximately £2,200, helping to support vaccination programmes in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.
Funds were raised through several activities during the day, including participant registration fees, donations for refreshments, the popular ‘Name the End Polio Now Bear’ competition, and the sale of books generously donated by Rotarian and author Dr. Mark Esho. Every contribution, whether large or small, played an important role in supporting the campaign.
Thank You to Everyone Who Made It Possible
Events such as the Rotary Polio Wheel ‘N’ Walk are only possible because of the dedication of volunteers, organisers, supporters, and local community members who generously give their time and energy. The Rotary Club of Leicester extends its sincere thanks to everyone who participated, donated, volunteered, or helped organise the event.
Special thanks also go to Stoneygate Baptist Church for hosting the event and providing such a welcoming venue, the CFWHub for its valued partnership, the guest speakers for sharing their knowledge, and every individual who contributed towards making the day both enjoyable and impactful.
Continuing the Fight Against Polio
While the world has made extraordinary progress towards eliminating polio, the work is not yet complete. Every fundraiser, every conversation, every vaccination, and every act of support brings the world one step closer to ensuring that no child will ever suffer from this preventable disease again.
The Rotary Polio Wheel ‘N’ Walk demonstrated the power of community action. By coming together with compassion, determination, and a shared sense of purpose, the people of Leicester have helped contribute to a global movement that is changing lives.
